Michael S. Masakowski

Portland, ME – Michael Stanley Masakowski, 93, died on October 11, 2015 after a brief illness.   He was born in Nanticoke, PA in 1922 to John and Stasia Masakowski.

The second of ten siblings born to Polish immigrants, he spoke fluent Polish.  After graduating from high school, where he played football and basketball, he worked at Pratt-Whitney Aircraft.  He then served in the 12th Armored Division (the “Hellcats”) of the U.S. Army during World War II under General Patton.  He remained an avid World War II historian throughout his life, and was proud of the Hellcats’ contributions in Europe, including liberation of the Dachau satellite concentration camps.

After returning from Europe, Mike moved to Washington D.C. where he attended American University and worked at Riggs National Bank.  There he met the love of his life, Joanna “Jo” Callegari, his wife of 66 years.  Together they raised three daughters in Garrett Park, MD.  Mike rose to become the Assistant Manager of the Northwest Federal Credit Union in Langley, VA.   Mike and Jo moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, in 2006, where they were parishioners at St. Bartholomew’s.  Jo passed away in 2014.

Mike will be remembered as a raconteur who enjoyed debating politics over two fingers of single malt scotch (Na zdrowie!).  He looked for and found something to enjoy in each day, even as his physical challenges increased with age.  He retained a lifelong interest in football and enjoyed watching the Patriots and many other teams.  Mike was also an avid woodworker, and a warm and devoted father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Mike was predeceased by his siblings Francis, Joseph, John, Edward, and Albin, and his sons-in-law Thaddeus Kowalski and David Luken.  He is survived by his siblings Ladisla, Sabina, Joan, and Daniel, his daughters Stephanie Luken (Michael Jackson), Lisa Kowalski, and Victoria Masakowski (Roger Inhorn) and 5 grandchildren: Margaret Kowalski, and Emma, Joseph, Anthony, and Vincent Inhorn.

Memorial services will be in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Mike’s name to the VNA Home Health Hospice (VNA Development Office, PO Box 679, Portland, ME, 04101-9804; or online at vnahomehealth.org/donate).
