Portland, ME – John McNeill, 62, of Scarborough, died on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at Maine Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Jean (Johnston) McNeill, who he was married to for thirty years.
John was born on July 7, 1953 in Wantagh, NY the eldest son of the late John Anthony McNeill and Therese (Dart) McNeill of Portland. He grew up in Wantagh, attending local area schools and graduated from MacArthur High School and then went on to obtain his Bachelor’s degree from S.U.N.Y. at Fredonia, NY. He moved to Albany, NY in 1981.
He was employed by the State of New York, Department of Transportation for thirty years and held a number of high level positions, including Assistant to First Deputy Commissioner. He retired to Maine in 2013 to be close to his family.
John enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, the horses at Saratoga and his beloved cat “Chili”. He was interested in history and enjoyed traveling with his wife all over the world. He was a kind and generous man who loved his family. They are heartbroken over his passing.
Besides his Mother, John is survived by his brother’s James and his wife Laura of Portland, ME, Joe and his wife Nancy of Portland, ME and Robert of San Francisco, CA. He was also a devoted uncle to Carla, Wes, Devin, Connor and Liam. He leaves longtime friends from his life in New York who he was in regular contact with. He will be dearly missed by them.
A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
